Mia Gunton is a Melbourne based artist who has recently graduated with a Bachelor of Visual Arts at Queensland College of Art and Design (2024). Her practice draws on cinema, still life, and self-portraiture to examine how visual culture constructs narratives of sexuality, desire, and betrayal.

Mia appropriates and re-stages stills from cinema, inserting herself into scenes to disrupt the passive gaze. Using symbolism, she considers how visual languages shape cultural understandings of pleasure and power.`

Her current research engages with sculpture from Greek and Roman antiquity, reinterpreting classic forms to inform contemporary depictions of desire. Mia looks at how sculptural objects become sites of emotional projection, desire, memory, and identification. Drawing on classical mythology, art history, and film, she examines the unique relationship between viewer and sculpture, exploring how inanimate objects can acquire a powerful sense of presence.
